Why doesn't ChatGPT mention my business?

Almost always one of three things: the pages about you cannot be retrieved, they describe your business rather than answering the question asked, or your site, Google profile and directory listings describe the same services in different words, so nothing corroborates and a clearer competitor gets named instead.

The short version

  • There is no directory to join and no fee that gets you included. Assistants read the live web when asked, so visibility is earned on pages, not purchased.
  • Reason one, retrievability: if a crawler cannot fetch and read the page, you do not exist for that answer.
  • Reason two, directness: a page that introduces your company does not answer "who should I use for X", so there is nothing to quote.
  • Reason three, consistency: when your surfaces disagree about your own services, no single fact about you is safe to state, and a competitor that agrees with itself gets named.
  • All three are measurable today, and all three are fixable without a rebuild in most cases.

Reason one: you cannot be retrieved

Start here, because it is binary. If the page cannot be fetched and read, nothing else on this list matters.

The usual causes are mundane. Content that only renders after JavaScript executes. Text inside an image, including the prices and service lists small businesses most often put there. A page that responds too slowly to be worth waiting for. Robots rules that block more than their author intended. A single-page site where every service shares one URL, so there is no specific page to return for a specific question.

This is also why a visually impressive site can underperform a plain one. Retrieval does not see your design. It sees text, structure and response time.

Reason two: your pages describe instead of answering

This is the commonest one among businesses that are technically fine.

An assistant answering "who does same-day aircon repair in this area" needs a passage that says who does same-day aircon repair in that area. A homepage that opens with a mission statement, a founding year and a list of values contains no such passage. It is read, found to be about the right topic, and skipped in favour of a page that states the thing outright.

The fix is structural, not stylistic. One page per question a buyer actually asks. The answer in the first paragraph, complete enough to stand alone with no surrounding context. Supporting detail after it, not before. This site is built that way deliberately: every page in this section answers one question and answers it first.

Reason three: your sources contradict each other

The quietest of the three and the most common cause of a business being invisible despite having plenty of content.

Consider a clinic whose website offers "acne scar treatment", whose Google Business Profile lists "skin rejuvenation", and whose directory entry says "facial therapy". A human reads all three as the same thing. A retrieval system has three different service names attached to one business and no way to know which is authoritative. Nothing corroborates anything, so stating any of it is a risk, so none of it gets stated.

A competitor using one phrase for that service across all three surfaces presents a single consistent fact. It is the safer thing to quote, so it gets quoted.

One service, one phrase, everywhere. That is most of the work, it costs nothing but discipline, and almost nobody does it.

What it costs

WhatPriceTimeline
Visibility auditRp 710.000, free with a website build~3 days
Competitor analysisRp 1.250.000, covers 3-5 competitors~1 week
Google Business Profile optimisationRp 1.520.000 per month, minimum 3 months1-2 weeks to set up
Workflow automationsQuoted per project, add-on only1-2 weeks
Website, new or revampedfrom Rp 7.550.0002-3 weeks

Two bundles exist, priced below the sum of their parts: website plus audit at Rp 7.550.000, which is the audit included free with a build, and everything except automation at Rp 8.540.000 one-time plus the Rp 1.520.000 monthly profile fee. Only the one-time work is discounted in a bundle; the monthly fee is the same either way.

The website figure covers a revamp or company profile up to about five pages, and a custom multi-page build is quoted per project. The profile work is monthly because a Google Business Profile does not stay fixed: hours change, categories get reshuffled, and reviews and questions keep arriving. A one-off cleanup decays within months, so it is not sold that way.

The audit is where everything starts: whether search engines and AI assistants name your business for buying-intent questions, whether they describe it correctly, and which businesses get named instead of you, by name. Plus a retrieval and consistency test across your site, your Google Business Profile and your other listings. About three days.

When this is a bad idea to chase

Do not chase this if nobody is searching for what you sell. Being quotable only pays where there is a question being asked. If your category does not exist in people's heads yet, you need demand generation, which is a different job.

Do not rebuild your website as the first move. Two of the three reasons above are fixed without touching the design, and the audit will tell you whether a rebuild is actually the constraint. Starting with the expensive step is how budgets get spent on the wrong problem.

Do not try to game it with volume. Twenty thin pages targeting variations of one question perform worse than one page that answers it properly, and they make your own surfaces less consistent, which is reason three.

Do not pay anyone promising to register you with ChatGPT or to guarantee a citation. Neither thing exists. Retrieval decides per query, per engine, at the moment of asking.

Common questions

Can I submit my business to ChatGPT directly?
No, and anyone selling you that is selling nothing. There is no submission form and no inclusion fee. Assistants read the public web at the moment they are asked, so the only way in is to be retrievable, clear and consistent on pages that already exist.
Is it because my business is too small or too new?
Rarely. Size affects how much is written about you elsewhere, which helps, but small businesses are routinely cited over larger ones because their pages answer the question directly and their details match everywhere. Clarity is cheaper to fix than size.
I rank on Google. Why does that not carry over?
Because ranking and citation are different outcomes. Ranking puts you in a list a person scans. Citation requires a passage an assistant can lift and compress without being wrong. A page can rank on relevance while offering nothing quotable.
How do I find out which of the three it is?
Measure it. Run your buyers' actual questions through the assistants and record who is named, then check whether a crawler can reach your pages and whether your listings agree. That is exactly what the audit does, in about three days.
